Chicago Last Minute
What started as a small fur trading post in the early 1800s has now become the sprawling, sophisticated, fast-paced metropolis known as Chicago. This “city of big shoulders” has something for everyone, whether you like to relax on the beach, explore the bustling downtown, or experience culture at its finest. Just hop a last minute flight and let yourself be amazed by the whirlwind adventure that awaits you in the Second City.
The stunning Chicago skyline is incredible to take in, especially when you consider that large sections of the city were once destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The fire didn’t stop people from coming and finding work here, and now both residents and the city’s visitors can feel the influence of the wide variety of cultures that have influenced this diverse city.
When it comes to outdoor activities, Chicago offers many incredible choices, all within city limits. Beaches run along the Lake Michigan front, starting from its southernmost boundary all the way up to the northern tip, and have been preserved for the people of the city to enjoy. North Avenue beach is probably the most popular and hosts the Air and Water Show in the summertime, and provides a stunning city view at night. A more laid back beach, Oak Street Beach, is not too far away. Even more secluded and peaceful beaches can be found in Chicago’s neighborhoods to the north and south of downtown. Along the lakefront, you’ll also find Navy Pier, a popular tourist attraction complete with a 150-foot Ferris wheel, an IMAX theater, and a concert dome.
The city is home to many parks that offer visitors open, green space. Grant Park downtown hosts a number of summer festivals, and so does modern and expansive newcomer Millennium Park. For even more green, head to the Garfield Park Conservatory, one of the nation’s oldest and largest conservatories. Room after room of enormous tropical plants provide a refreshing and enchanting experience.
Sports fans will soak up the enthusiasm residents have for their home teams, including the Chicago Bulls, the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Sox. Seeing a baseball game at Wrigley Field, one of the nation’s smallest and best-loved ball parks, is truly a memorable experience.
There are also a number of interesting and eclectic neighborhoods to visit in this city. Lincoln Park is a popular nightlife destination, while Chinatown is a favorite for dining and gift shopping. Restaurants, theaters and bars of every kind can be found sprinkled throughout each neighborhood. If you’d rather just experience the grandeur of the city all at once, take a tour of the gigantic Willis Tower or the Hancock Center.
Of course, Chicago is home to lots of museums and cultural institutions, such as the Art Institute, the Museum of Science and Industry, the Field Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art. There’s also the Adler Planetarium and the Shedd Aquarium. All of these are great options on a last-minute adventure, so take your pick!
Last but not least, don’t forget to indulge your culinary desires in Chicago, as it is known as a city that loves its food. Music, too, has a big place in Chicago, especially jazz and the blues. Whatever your heart desires, it’s here!
