Sacramento Last Minute
Capital of one of the largest States in the US, Sacramento CA is a shining jewel that will impress even the most sophisticated last-minute traveler. Located along the Sacramento River, this city is home to around 460,000 people, making it the seventh largest city in California. The larger Sacramento Metropolitan area encompasses several large counties and has been named one of the ten most livable regions in the US by Partners for Livable Communities. Sacramento grew to be the thriving city it is today thanks to the influence of the California Gold Rush, which brought commercial and agricultural opportunities to the area.
Sacramento may only be 97.2 square miles, but there are endless options when it comes to entertainment, dining, and outdoor attractions. The weather, which usually consists of hot summers and mild winters, is perfect for a last minute vacation that includes all kinds of activities. Sometimes, though, summer days can get quite sweltering, reaching temperatures as high as 90 degrees. The only relief is the Delta Breeze, which comes to the rescue from the San Francisco Bay.
Getting around the city will be no sweat. Sacramento Regional Transit services the city and the nearby suburbs. Bicycling is also a popular way to get around, as well as a great way to see the sights and really get to know the city.
When it comes to museums, Sacramento has plenty! Check out the California State Railroad, the largest rail museum in North America. With 21 locomotives and railroad cars and 46 exhibits, it’s sure to please the seasoned railfans and the amateurs alike. At the State Indian Museum, visitors can get a feel for the life and history of California’s Native American population through the art-and-crafts exhibits and the fascinating demonstration village.
For automobile fanatics, the Tow Auto Museum is a must-see. Over 100 cars make up this museum’s fine collection, with some of the more interesting items being the 1931 Chrysler and a bullet-proof Cadillac limousine once used by the US State Department. You can even catch a quick lunch at the roadside cafe!
If you’ve got kids along for the trip, make sure to stop by the Discovery Museum, a hands-on showcase of Sacramento’s history. If that doesn’t satisfy your appetite for history, try a visit to the Governor’s Mansion, built in 1877, which claims to be one of the first homes in California to have an indoor bathroom.
Another option is Columbia State Historic Park, where visitors can partake in all sorts of fun activities, like going for a ride in a stagecoach, panning for gold, or admiring a blacksmith’s fine craftsmanship.
Sacramento, a beautiful and sunny escape, will keep you busy and fascinated for as long as your last minute trip lasts.
