Tallahassee Last Minute

Located in the northwestern part of Florida, Tallahassee has every convenience of a larger city while retaining a bit of southern charm. Since 1824, Tallahassee has been the capital of Florida and also boasts a college town identity. Any last minute traveler will be impressed by the area’s hilly terrain and the variety of flora and fauna found here. The landscape is amazing in fact, in 2006, Tallahassee was named “Best in America” for parks and recreation by the National Recreation and Park Association. With a hot and humid subtropical climate, this town is where you go to enjoy warm summer evenings, and where you can cool off in the mild, short winters.

Home to a number of colleges including Florida State University, Florida A&M University, and Tallahassee Community College, Tallahassee is a great place to live, learn, work and play.

Once you arrive from your last-minute flight, you’ll definitely want to check out the Goodwood Museum and Garden, which will give you a taste of the area’s beginnings. Besides the gracious Main House, built around 1840 and restored to the 1920s era, this estate is home to over twenty structures, including a skating rink, aviary, swimming pool, water tower and several cottages. Inside the house, you’ll be stunned by the beauty of the three-story mahogany staircase, the marble fireplaces, and the oldest fresco ceilings in Florida.

If you want to see more of what the gorgeous landscape can offer, head to Lake Jackson Mounds Archaeological State Park. While it appears peaceful now, it was once heavily populated by a Native American community which flourished during the 1200 1500 AD period. Trails and an exhibit area tell the story of the mound complex.

If your tastes are more modern, you might enjoy the Tallahassee Automobile Museum, where you can get a look at 80 rare automobiles, including an 1894 Duryea. The Museum also has collections of antique trinkets like perfume bottles, Indian artifacts, knives and much more.

But there are some things about Tallahassee that are better experienced than observed. One of these is the Tallahassee Symphony, which is in season from September to late April. Performing a variety of pieces, this symphony is composed of music faculty from Florida State University, graduate students and professional musicians. Let yourself get lost in the sweet sounds of this magnificent piece of Tallahassee’s culture.

Or, if you happen to be in town in January, you could check out the Freedom Blues Festival, a week-long celebration of the blues that culminates in a two-day concert series.

Tallahassee’s warm and welcoming Southern culture can be experienced in a number of ways. The Governor’s Mansion, where Florida’s chief executive officer lives with his family, is open to the public for tours!

Whether in winter, spring, summer or fall, your trip to Tallahassee will be pleasant and filled with fun. Come see what it’s all about!
